Have you tried focusing with another focus point and then holding the focus while taking the image? For a focuspoint to the side should have a longer optical way, so it might get a little better.
So try focusing with another focuspoint, while using the usual centre-target focuspoint for the image.
Hm.. did you understand me or do I sound like a real moron?
